Dr Philip Skuce

My research interests relate to the sustainable control of helminth parasites (worms and fluke) in livestock. The diseases caused by these parasites are amongst the most important and prevalent endemic production-limiting diseases of livestock, and represent a significant constraint on efficient livestock production, both in the UK and globally. This involves research into novel diagnostics, vaccine studies and disease control strategies. I also have a specific interest in the monitoring and management of anthelmintic (wormer) resistance. My work involves a significant component of knowledge

Steven Thomson

I am the Sector Lead for Communities for the SEFARI Gateway. I have a wealth of experience, having worked on agricultural and rural policy matters with SRUC for the last 25 years. Much of my work focuses on assessing the impacts of agricultural and rural development policy (in particular their reforms) and I have recently been heavily engaged in considerations of the consequences of Brexit on Scottish agriculture and wider agri-food supply chains. I am currently joint coordinator of the Rural Industries work package of the Scottish Government’s 2016-2021 Strategic Research Programme which is

Dr Kenneth Loades

My own research includes the sustainable management of soils and the interaction between roots and soil for both soil stability and crop root performance. Soil is a finite resource which we therefore need to protect when you consider that 95% of our food comes from soil. However, the pressures from intensive food production and losses of soil through erosion means we must increase the sustainable management of our soils. Soils are critical for not only growing food but also filtering water and reducing flooding which requires management for many services they provide to the environment as a

Professor Lorna Dawson

My research interests relate to the development and application of environmental tools in search and trace evidence in the Criminal Justice System. I am an Expert Witness, a Chartered Scientist and a registered expert with the National Crime Agency, having worked with many police forces in the UK and abroad and regularly present evidence in court. I am head of Forensic Soil Science at the James Hutton Institute, Aberdeen and lead a team of scientists covering subjects including botany, mycology, palynology, mineralogy, organic and isotope chemistry, plant DNA and statistics, as applied to

Dr Charles Bestwick

I am SEFARI Gateway's director, the Gateway is the knowledge exchange and impact hub for SEFARI. I have also been a SEFARI Advisor working across research themes and knowledge exchange systems to support our impact agenda. I am a Principal Investigator at the Rowett Institute, University of Aberdeen and hold an Honorary (Visiting) Professorship at Robert Gordon University. My research interests include the identification of human health benefits from consumption of crops and wild edible plant species. More information about my advisor role and research interests and activities can be found

Dr Rob Brooker

My research interests relate to interactions between plants and their environment. This has included work in alpine and arctic environments, and trying to understand the factors that regulate biodiversity and the response of these systems to climate change. Visit my profile to find about more. For SEFARI I focus on the interactions between plants in arable farming systems, including interactions between crop and plants, and between crops and non-crop vascular plants, particularly agricultural weeds. The aim of this work is to understand the role of biodiversity in regulating system functions

New Director for Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland

"The scientific world is increasingly data-rich, so the data analysis and modelling skills at the heart of BioSS will continue to grow in importance, whether for scientific discovery, for informing policy or for improving profitability in the private sector" Dr Mark Brewer has been appointed new Director of Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland (BioSS). BioSS is based within the James Hutton Institute and works collaboratively with the other Scottish Environment, Food and Agriculture Institutes (SEFARI), specialises in quantitative methods and operates at the interface between mathematically
