Dr Ioanna Akoumianaki

I am a biologist and catchment-to-sea scientist. My research career has taken me from the deep sea to estuaries and river catchments, tracing the flows of carbon and nutrients and exploring how ecosystems build resilience in the face of change. Over time, I stepped beyond the disciplinary boundaries of my training and expertise to work at the science–policy interface, ensuring research evidence informs environmental decision-making and contributes to sustainable futures across land, water and sea.

“They seek it here, they seek it there” - studying integrated water management

For the past 6 years my colleagues and I have been studying if and how we can better join up delivery of different goals for water management, i.e. for improving water quality and quantity.

An Internet of (Living) Things: exploring new opportunities for environmental monitoring

To meet many local, national and international policy and business requirements there is a need to monitor the state of Scotland’s natural resources. These commitments span from day to day monitoring of Scotland’s freshwater bodies, so ensuring enough water of the right quality is available for a range of individuals, communities and wildlife; to longer-term monitoring of legally protected and iconic terrestrial and marine habitats and species e.g. Caledonian pinewoods and Capercaillie. Dr Nick Schurch

Nick joined BioSS as the Principal statistician for Ecology and Environmental Science in April 2019, shifting field from bioinformatics. In this position Nick leads the team of BioSS statisticians embedded at the James Hutton Institute site in Aberdeen, focussing on modelling environmental research data. The team collaborate on projects spanning the full range of environmental science, including climate change, water pollution, landscape decision making, environmental eDNA forensics and biodiversity census data.

Dr Miriam Glendell

Miriam is a am a catchment scientist interested in a cross-disciplinary understanding of the effects of land use on multiple ecosystem services, including water quality, freshwater biodiversity, soil conservation and carbon management in catchment systems. Her research combines aspects of freshwater biology, hydrology, soil science and biogeochemistry to address key challenges related to the sustainable management of soils and surface water.

Helen Watson

Helen is a research assistance in Environmental and Biochemical sciences at the James Hutton Institute. She is an experienced technical assistant with both field and laboratory based skills. Dr Susan Cooksley

Susan is a catchment scientist and practitioner. She specialises in understanding anthropogenic impacts on water and habitat quality in order to support the sustainable management of river systems. Susan coordinates a programme of water-energy research in support of the sustainable planning, development and management of Scotland's hydropower resources.

Dr Nikki Baggaley

Nikki is an environmental scientist at the James Hutton Institute. Nikki's current research is focused on soil hydrology and its linkage to water quality, quantity and Green House Gas emissions. She is involved in modelling soil erosion at national and catchment scales using Pan European Soil Risk Assessment model, PESERA. She is interested in developing links between soil hydrology and the transport of chemicals and particulate matter both in fragile upland environments and lowland agricultural systems.
