Gender Inequality in Climate Change

Climate change affects everyone, but the impacts are felt in different ways by different people all over the world. Countries with lower socioeconomic status are often hit harder, alongside countries and populations that rely more on their economy and environment for natural resources. Profession, as well as location, also ties into how individuals may be impacted. For example, farmers can be some of the hardest hit by changing global climates, as unpredictable weather and rainfall damage agricultural yields. Similarly, different demographics respond to the crisis in different ways.

Healthy People Healthy Planet: A film festival celebrating conservation stories from around the world

Too often, biodiversity conservation news reporting focusses on negative stories with little regard to the amazing efforts being made to counter our diminishing resources and the associated successes seen in biodiversity conservation. We see our role, and that of the festival, as being a platform to show people these good news stories and help promote the values of the conservation optimism movement.

SAGES 2023 Annual Science Meeting

As in previous years, the conference will include a wide range of presentations, topics, keynote speakers, publication, and poster competitions.

Delegates will be able to present their research, find out about SAGES funding and the benefits of being a SAGES member, enter our competitions for ‘Best published paper’ and ‘Best poster’. It’s also a great opportunity to network with other early career researchers and academics from all disciplines in our five science themes.

Wild plants and urban greenery…my experience at the RBGE

The food system, which includes agriculture, land use, storage, transport, packaging, processing, retail and consumption already accounts for 21-37% of total greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, if we are to meet the Scottish Government’s climate target by 2045, relying on conventional agriculture systems is no longer an option and we will need to work together to find alternative solutions.

I am a biologist and catchment-to-sea scientist. My research career has taken me from the deep sea to estuaries and river catchments, tracing the flows of carbon and nutrients and exploring how ecosystems build resilience in the face of change. Over time, I stepped beyond the disciplinary boundaries of my training and expertise to work at the science–policy interface, ensuring research evidence informs environmental decision-making and contributes to sustainable futures across land, water and sea.

Which habitats are at greatest risk from plant pests and pathogens?

Plant pests and pathogens can have a devastating impact not only on plant hosts but also the wider biodiversity that use the infected plant (e.g., for food, breeding and shelter). Thus, a decline in one plant species can have cascading effects on a wide range of other species, sometimes causing severe declines in their populations.

Healthy environment, healthy milk: Explore our virtual farm tour

During the creation of this virtual tour, we were welcomed to Fineview and the lush green gently sloping hills of Glenluce, an amazing innovative and award winning farm enterprise. The project brought farmers and researchers together to discuss the underpinning science, its application and utilisation in practice.

The Tarland Catchment: Monitoring landscape interventions to improve water quality, benefit riparian habitat and mitigate flooding

The Tarland Burn Catchment (~70 km²) has been studied since the year 2000 making it one of the longest running comprehensive catchment management case studies in the UK. Critically there has been core funding support through cycles of Scottish Government strategic research programmes in turn, enabling integration with UK and European projects.

Meet Scotland’s leaders in biodiversity conservation science

Biodiversity has never been under more pressure, with over a million species – around a quarter of the world’s mammals, one in seven birds and 40 percent of amphibians and plants – currently threatened with extinction. Land-use change, direct exploitation and climate change are the leading causes of what’s been dubbed the ‘sixth mass extinction event’ in the Earth’s history.

Vertical farming - is the sky the limit?

The global food system is thought to account for around one third of global greenhouse emissions which contribute to climate change. It is estimated that food production, which includes growing, transport and processing, contributes to 15-30% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the UK.
