Food fraud costs the UK around £2 billion per year, and improving testing methods is key to tackling this issue. However, current techniques often lack the speed and accuracy needed to detect mislabelled meat products. Researchers at the Rowett Institute have developed a cutting-edge method called MEATiCode, which can simultaneously identify multiple meat species in a single processed food sample.
The food industry is facing a major challenge with imported food because of a lack of transparency regarding the origin of our food in an increasingly connected globe. This lack of clarity presents a range of challenges for food authenticity, ranging from safety concerns to health, religious and ethical issues.
On the 14th of February the Office for National Statistics (ONS) announced that the overall annual inflation for January 2024 was still at 4 per cent, as in December 2023. However, it was also announced that the food inflation figure for January represented the first monthly fall in food prices since 2021 (BBC, 2024). This is very good news as food has been one of the leading sectors contributing to the higher-to-the-target overall price inflation.
