Phoebe Somervail

Phoebe is a research assistant in the Sustainable Transitions and Behaviours group of the Social, Economic and Geographical Sciences department (SEGS). Her role involves contributing to the delivery of qualitative and quantitative research projects by assisting with method design, stakeholder engagement, interviews, workshops, data entry and synthesis, report writing and literature reviews.

Integrated socio-environmental modelling of policy scenarios for Scotland

This project develops the science and skills needed to work in an ‘agile’ way with policymakers and stakeholders on computer modelling at the whole-of-Scotland scale. We are working on a framework for monitoring soils; mapping our land capability and how it is affected by climate change; and simulating the effects of agricultural payments, trade, and technology change on rural businesses.

I have analysed waters from all over Scotland for their Strontium isotope signature as part of the National Waters Inventory for Scotland (NWIS) which is funded by the Scottish Government. In the summer of 2011 I developed new Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium isotope methods for looking at plant and soil materials and I hope to use these methods again soon.

Dr Frances Sandison

Frances graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2010 with a BSc (Hons) in Biology. From there she went on to further specialise with her Masters in Biodiversity, Wildlife and Ecosystem Health, graduating from the University of Edinburgh for a second time in 2014. Developing a strong interest in sustainability as a result of my masters, she went on to accept a position working that the NAFC marine centre in Shetland, as a Graduate Trainee in the Fisheries and Marine Science department.
