Dr Andrea Britton

Andrea Britton is a senior post-doctoral research scientist in the Ecological Sciences Group. Andrea's primary interests lie in the biodiversity and functioning of upland and especially alpine ecosystems, and the changes occuring in these ecosystems as a result of human influences including pollutant (nitrogen and sulphur) deposition and climate change.

Dr Katherine Irvine

I am a senior researcher in conservation behaviour / environmental psychology focusing on the nature-health-sustainable behaviours nexus. I draw on an interdisciplinary background in molecular biology, natural resource management, conservation behaviour and environmental psychology to investigate the interface between people and their environmental settings (for example, natural, built, home, office) with an aim to develop bridges between issues of ecological quality, health/wellbeing and sustainability.

Dr Gordon McDougall

My research interests are in plant product quality especially in food applications. I have applied various analytical techniques, including metabolomics, to model how agronomy, climate, genotype or processing influences plant biochemistry and final product quality. I have a particular interest in determining how the levels of health beneficial components are genetically controlled in soft fruits.  I have focused on polyphenols and their effects on human health.

Dr Gareth Newman

Gareth is Service Delivery Manager at James Hutton Limimted. Gareth has a keen interest in developing new analytical techniques and has been involved in analysing blood samples for Selenium (see publications). Future research work aims to look at the uncertainty involved with values approaching the limits of detection on both ICP techniques and the uncertainties of different sample matrices. Gareth has worked for the Institute since 1995 as head of Inorganic analysis within the analytical section specialising in the following analytical techniques:
