Peatland restoration is one of the major policy interventions in Scotland’s Climate Change Plan, with a target of 20,000 hectares per year. Peatlands in good condition are net carbon sinks, while degraded sites can emit substantial amounts of carbon, contributing to climate change. Since the start of this millennium, over £10 million has been spent on publicly funded restoration projects to reduce Scotland’s net carbon emissions.

The IUCN UK Peatland Programme Conference will combine visits to some of Scotland’s peatland restoration sites with a programme of insightful sessions around the rural economy, public engagement, and conservation and land management.

The conference kicks-off with a visit to SRUC’s Auchteryre demonstration farm for a hands-on session to explore the opportunities and challenges of delivering public goods from private land. SRUC and SEFARI’s Professor Davy McCracken, Head of Hill and Mountain Research and Anne Gray, Director of The Heather Trust, will facilitate the half-day event on moorland and upland land use and peatland’s place within it. More information can be found here.

During day two, the James Hutton Institute and SEFARI’s Dr Rebekka Artz and colleagues will premiere a new virtual reality showing how peatland restoration in Scotland contributes to climate change mitigation using ongoing research projects of partners at the James Hutton Institute, SRUC and Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh.

The conference is jointly organised by Scottish Natural Heritage and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

Location: The Shore: Loch Lomond, Balloch, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park
