COVID-19: More ways than one to help those who need it most

“I am really inspired by our staff’s dedication and imaginative ways of helping in these difficult times and leaving no stone unturned. Every small effort helps.” James Hutton Institute employees have been helping efforts to provide frontline staff in Tayside and North East Scotland with much-needed personal protection equipment (PPE) during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. The Institute has previously identified all surplus PPE and supplied it to local NHS contacts. However, our staff are finding further ways of getting PPE to those who need it most including now face shields and masks to protect

Accessible Education Resources – Coming Soon

Many of us look forward to spring and at SEFARI we are no different. It’s the time our gardens start to come back to life and usually at this time we would also be sharing our knowledge and enthusiasm with families young and old at the Edinburgh Science Festival. We really enjoy developing and running a range of free to access activities hosted at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh during the festival each year. However, that is in “normal times” and the unprecedented health crisis posed by COVID-19 means for the safety of us all face to face interaction isn’t currently possible, and we all

MycoNourish raises funding to improve crop production with innovative customised microbes

"There are countless microbes that have both positive and negative effects on plant growth. The funding, combined with a recent £125K Higgs Award from Scottish EDGE, will allow the company to grow the business and release their first two products targeted

Biodiversity conservation and COVID-19: remember links between healthy ecosystems and human wellbeing

"This editorial is the product of discussions among conservation scientists from around the world. Our objective is to highlight the short and long-term consequences of this pandemic for biodiversity and for conservation science" “Society's priorities must be human health and the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic, but we also need to be thinking ahead to the resumption of conservation practice and education. There is an opportunity here to remind people of the links between healthy, resilient ecosystems and human well-being.” That is one of the messages of an editorial co-written by

How can we safeguard biodiversity through values and governance?

Despite many initiatives to safeguard biodiversity, recent analyses and reports show that biodiversity continues to decline at the global level. To change this situation requires appropriate governance mechanisms. Governance is the process of making and applying rules and procedures that (seek to) influence motivations and behaviours. As such, biodiversity governance can be seen as a reflection of particular sets of values that determine what to conserve and where, what to regard as acceptable ways of using and managing land and biodiversity, and how to frame and negotiate trade-offs.
