New research highlights long-term impact of flooding on communities

"Such flooding continues to have a significant impact on people’s personal well-being, livelihoods, and property. This study reveals the consequence of such events on people and communities and the potential legacy of such increasingly frequent damaging storms, both now and into the future" A new report by Scotland’s Centre of Expertise for Waters (CREW), highlights the profound and long-lasting impacts of flooding on individuals, businesses and communities in Scotland. Pulses, sustainable 'superfoods' for the future

"The fascinating possibilities offered by pulses are the subject of close study by scientists at the James Hutton Institute, from their use in health foods for humans and animals to novel uses" World Pulses Day (10th February) is a designated United Nations global event to recognise the importance of pulses (chickpeas, dry beans, lentils, dry peas and lupins among others) as a global food. Together with partners across Europe and the world, scientists at the James Hutton Institute are at the forefront of research into the exciting possibilities of pulses to feed the world in a sustainable way

Tail biting in pigs: developing a machine vision early warning system for farmers

Tail biting affects growing pigs in Scotland and around the world and has no simple solution. It begins in a sudden and unpredictable way, then spreads through a group. It can lead to losses at the abattoir due to carcass condemnation, estimated at around 1% of pigs. We are using 3D cameras and machine vision software to automatically detect an early warning sign of tail biting: pigs holding their tails low. Together with agriculture-technology and pig supply chain companies, we are working on commercial farms to develop and test an early warning system for farmers so they can respond more

A systems perspective on sustainable agriculture: ‘MAGIC’ approach presented at European Parliament

"Policymaking in this area is incredibly challenging and can benefit from new, more holistic, analytical approaches to identify where change is needed, and to better anticipate the consequences of potential interventions" Adopting a systems perspective is essential to help agriculture contribute to Europe’s own policy objectives and also international targets such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals. That was one of the key messages of a presentation delivered by Hutton scientists Dr Kerry Waylen ( SEGS) and Dr Keith Matthews (ICS) with Professor Mario Giampietro (Autonomous University of

Innovative New Tool: Food swapping for healthier and more sustainable diets

In recent years, sustainable diets are increasingly being promoted as a way to reduce the impact of human activities on the planet as well as to improve population health. Food consumption is responsible for up to 30% of the environmental impact of household consumption, and recently sustainability has been added to dietary goals in several countries (albeit not in the UK yet). BioSS and the Rowett Institute have previously developed the tool ‘ Number Muncher Diets’, creating an individual healthy and green weekly shopping list using mathematical methods to optimise environmental impact or
